Science Facilitator Wins Award

Description

Dr. Linda E. James and Ms. Tammy Lee, both in the College
of Education at East Carolina, were recently awarded Distinguished Service
in Science Education in North Carolina Awards by the North Carolina Science
Teachers Association (NCSTA).

James, an assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Science
Education, won in the university/college category. Lee, a 2003 graduate of
ECU's Master's in science education program and current facilitator for
North Carolina Partnership for Improving Mathematics and Science (NC-PIMS),
a 17-county regional collaboration administered through the Center for
Science, Mathematics and Technology Education to improve the quality of K-12
mathematics and science education in Eastern North Carolina, won in the
elementary division.

Awardees are recognized for service to science education in their schools,
school systems, districts and/or states. James' service and research focuses
on the impact of professional development in inquiry science instruction for
elementary teachers. She has worked with teachers in Bertie, Martin and
Pitt counties over the last decade, many of whom have gone on to pursue
graduate degrees in science education.

James has been an instructor in ECU's College of Education for the past
seven years. She has been involved extensively in development and
implementation of the education college's new online Master's degree program
in science education, the first program of its kind in North Carolina.
James notes that receiving this year's award has special meaning to her
because NCSTA recently renamed the university award for former colleague Dr.
Donald Bailey who passed earlier this year. Bailey's wife, daughter and
son-in-law were present at the event.

Lee was cited for nearly a decade of service as a Pitt County elementary
teacher and for her commitment to the professional development of teachers
in Craven and Beaufort counties through NC-PIMS.
